What is domain age?
Domain age is how long a domain has been registered, measured from its creation date to today. It is not how long the current owner has held it — a domain keeps its original creation date through transfers, though a lapse and re-registration resets it.
Does domain age affect SEO?
Age itself is a weak, indirect signal — Google has said it does not directly rank by domain age. What correlates is that older domains have had longer to earn backlinks, trust and history. A brand-new domain is not penalised, but an established one has a head start.
How is domain age calculated here?
We read the domain's registration record over RDAP (the modern successor to WHOIS) and take the creation event date, then count whole days and years to today. We also show the expiry date so you can see how long the registration is paid up.
Can I check when a domain expires too?
Yes — this tool reports the registration expiry date alongside the age. If you want alerting before it lapses, domain-expiry monitoring watches it for you and emails you well ahead of the deadline.
Why does the age not match a WHOIS lookup?
RDAP and WHOIS draw from the same registry data, but some registries redact or format dates differently, and a domain that expired and was re-registered shows the newer creation date. If a registry does not expose RDAP, we cannot compute the age.
